Will of Elizabeth RANGER

Transcript of the Will of Elizabeth RANGER [Family 0509]: written 3 May 1849, proved 14 Feb 1853.

This is the last will and testament of me Elizabeth RANGER {née PAWSON, w/o William RANGER} of Headcorn in the County of Kent, Widow. I appoint Richard NELMS of Gravesend in the County of Kent, Gentleman, to be the executor of my Will. I bequeath the following specific legacies, namely to Sophia NELMS {RANGER}, the Wife or the said Richard NELMS my table and dessert spoons. To the said Richard NELMS the mourning ring given to me on the occasion of the death of William RANGER, late of Cranbrook in the County of Kent deceased. To Julia RANGER the daughter of the late William RANGER my Ottoman. I bequeath the pecuniary legacies of sterling money following,namely, To Francis BROTHERS of Ashford in the County of Kent, Gentleman, the sum of ten pounds. To the said Richard NELMS the sum of ten pounds. To the said Sophia NELMS, the Wife of the said Richard NELMS the sum of ten pounds. To the said Sophia RANGER the sum of ten pounds. To Julia RANGER, daughter of the said William RANGER, deceased, the sum of ten pounds. To Frederick RANGER, another of the sons of the sons of the said William RANGER deceased the sum of ten pounds. To Elizabeth JENNINGS now living with the said Richard NELMS, the sum of ten pounds. To my Brother William NORMAN the sum of ten pounds. To my Sister Ann GAMMA the sum of ten pounds. To Sarah NORMAN of No. 80 Wheatley Street, Leicester, Widow ten pounds. Lastly I bequeath unto my son Thomas RANGER now in America the whole of the Remainder of my Personal Property And I direct that my executor shall sell the remainder of my furniture and pay the proceeds to my said son. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this third day of May in the Year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty nine — Elizabeth RANGER — signed and published by the said Elizabeth RANGER in the presence of us who in her presence and in the presence of each other have at her request hereunto subscribed our names as witnesses — Christmas SAINT — Mary FULLGAR —.


This is a Codicil to my last will and testament as made and executed by me Elizabeth RANGER on the third day of May one thousand eight hundred and forty nine and as contained in the first side of this sheet of paper. i hereby appoint Sophia NELMS Wife of the said Richard NELMS and with his consent Executrix of my said Will jointly with her said husband. I revoke the pecuniary legacy of ten pounds given in my said Will to Julia RANGER she having since died and hereby bequeath the same sum to her brother Frederick RANGER in addition to the legacy already given him. I also revoke the specific legacy of an ottoman to Julia RANGER and hereby give the same to her sister Sophia RANGER in addition to the legacy already given her. In the event of my Brother William NORMAN dying in my lifetime the legacy of ten pounds given to him will cease and form part of the residue of my estate. In the event of my Sister Ann GAMMA dying in my lifetime the legacy of ten pounds given to he I hereby bequeath to her daughter Susan WRIGHT of Long Buckby, Northamptonshire. In the event of Sarah NORMAN dying in my lifetime the legacy of ten pounds given to her I hereby bequeath to her oldest daughter Sarah. In the event of Elizabeth JENNINGS dying in my lifetime the legacy of ten pounds given to her I hereby bequeath as follows: five pounds to Sophia NELMS in addition to the other legacies given to her and five pounds to her sister Elizabeth BOOTH. I hereby give and bequeath to Sophia NELMS a further legacy of ten pounds as a remuneration for her trouble as Executrix in addition to the other legacies given her. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand the twenty second day of July one thousand eight hundred and fifty two — Elizabeth RANGER — Signed and published by the said Elizabeth RANGER the Executrix as and for a Codicil to her last Will and Testament in the presence of her and in the presence of each other have at her request subscribed our names as witnesses the alteration in the thirteenth line and in the second line of this attestation having first been made — William REED 3 Edwin St Milton next Gravesend — George COOKE 1 South Hill Villas.

In the Goods of Elizabeth RANGER, Widow, Deceased.

Approved Personally Richard NELMS of Gravesend in the County of Kent, Gentleman and made oath that he is the Executor named in the las Will and Testament now hereto annexed bearing date the third day of May one thousand eight hundred and forty nine of the said Elizabeth RANGER late of Headcorn in the County of Kent, Widow, deceased. And the appearer further made oath that he was present on occasion of the execution of the codicil the the said Will of the said deceased, the said Codicil bearing date the twenty second day of July one thousand eight hundred and fifty twi and being now also hereto annexed and that on the twenty second day of July aforesaid the said Executrix duly executed her said Codicil by signing her name at the foot of and thereof in the presence of this Appearer and of William REED and George COOKE the two subscribed witnesses thereto they being all present at the same time and the said William REED and George COOKE that attested and subscribed the said Codicil own the presence of the said Executrix of each other and of this Appearer — Richard NELMS — On the eleventh day of February 1853 the said Richard NELMS was duly sworn to the truth of this affidavit Before me F T PRATT Sr. Ptr., Charles FEBBS Noty. Proved at London with a Codicil the 14th February 1853 before the Worshipful Frederic Thomas PRATT Doctor of Laws and Surrogate by the oaths of Richard NELMS the Executor named in the Will and Sophia NELMS (Wife of the said Richard NELMS) the Executrix named in the Codicil to whom Admon was granted having been first sworn duly to administer.
